The Musical Identity Measure is the research foundation behind Music&Me. It is a scientifically validated tool designed to help people understand how they see themselves as musicians and how this shapes their experiences, motivation, and wellbeing. The Musical Identity Measure was created by collecting responses from 336 musicians of different ages, backgrounds, and musical roles. Researchers analysed 68 statements using factor analysis, which revealed four consistent components of musical identity: Musical Calling, Musical Self‑Efficacy, Emotional Connection, and Growth Mindset.
We then refined the measure through confirmatory factor analysis, producing a reliable 22‑item model that fit the data well. Additional testing showed the model worked similarly for men and women and that identity patterns shift across age groups.
This rigorous, multi‑stage process established a scientifically robust framework for understanding how people relate to music — forming the foundation for Music&Me
Through the analysis, the researchers discovered that musical identity is shaped by four key factors:
1. Musical calling: How strongly a person feels drawn to music and how central music is to who they are. This reflects passion, purpose, and a deep sense of connection.
2. Musical self-efficacy: A musician’s confidence in their abilities – their belief that they can learn, improve, and succeed.
3. Emotional connection: The emotional role that music plays in someone’s life, such as providing comfort, fulfilment, expression or stability.
4. Growth mindset: The belief that musical abilities develop through effort, practice and learning. This dimension is closely linked to motivation, resilience, and wellbeing
Because the Musical Identity Measure has been rigorously tested and statistically validated it provides a trustworthy framework for understanding how people relate to music. The identity insights it provides can help individuals:

- identify areas where they may benefit from extra support
